How 5G will impact mobility?

The arrival of 5G brings us to a global revolution that will impact our daily lives. This is a major development for the Internet of Things (IOT), but not only. A new ecosystem is emerging and many players such as Vodafone, so Orange and Huawei are striving to find a place in the market. 

 

Since the publication of the EU Telecom ministers roadmap defining the main stages of the deployment of 5G in the European Union, the number of initiatives is growing to prepare the ground. In France, ARCEP (Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications) oversees the development of these projects.

 

Today, we are entering a pre-commercialization phase with the arrival of the first 5G services in 2019. Operators such as Qualcomm or Orange are planning to launch a commercialization in 2020, when the 5G smartphone offer will be sufficient.

The promises of 5G

The number 1 objective of 5G is to make data transit faster and thus allow mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, connected objects, etc.) to send and receive data in very large quantities. Connecting all these devices together will make life easier for users.

5G is the promise of more speed, higher speed access to internet, less latency and faster connections. The flow will be multiplied by 10 compared to the 4G, according to the frequencies used. A bit rate between 100 Mb / s and 1Gb / s could be obtained, which is the level of the fiber. The transmission time will be divided by 10 and the latency should be less than one millisecond, against 25 to 40 milliseconds for 4G.

 

With 5G, however, the security of the communication network will have to be strengthened. Indeed, the greater the connectivity and the throughput, the greater the chances of attacking.

 

5G on the mobility sector

5G will not only impact smartphones, a wide variety of sectors will benefit from these technological advances. This is particularly the case for the mobility sector.

First, the arrival of 5G will help to develop the connectivity by strengthening the range of entertainment and passenger comfort (internet, media content, games, etc.). It will be perfectly integrated into the connected and autonomous cars, which will become real living areas, where you can watch movies, work remotely etc.

More importantly, many integrated services will be able to develop, such as predictive maintenance, driving assistance, real-time route optimization, accident management and many more! The embedded 5G will transform user experience.

Connected and autonomous vehicles will be able to access information even more quickly. 

V2X technology (Cellular Vehicle to Everything) will allow almost instantaneous exchange between vehicles, but also between vehicles and infrastructure such as street furniture, fires, buildings, etc. Vehicles will be able to react and adapt to different situations.

They will be able to benefit from a 360° vision, anticipate the risks of accidents and streamline traffic.

It is indeed important to remember that the major challenge of the connected car of tomorrow will be the road safety. Ensuring a safe and reliable environment to avoid accidents is essential.

 

To this end, several “full-size” pilot sites have already been launched, such as the case of Orange and Sony Ericsson, who have deployed test center tracks at Linas-Montlhéry (Essonne) equipped with an experimental 5G network.

 

We are creating a fake city that will cover 5 to 10 hectares with building facades, partitions, zebra crossings, all the road infrastructure (intersections, roundabouts, traffic lights) and the many obstacles that can be encountered in an urban environment.

Similar initiatives are underway in the United States (AT & T) and South Korea. 

 

Finally, it is important to point out that the arrival of 5G is likely to accentuate a digital divide between territories, with, on the one hand, metropolises enjoying very high speed and on the other hand, the more isolated cities that will have to content with 3G or 4G, which is still not deployed throughout the country.
